Tamriel's Imperial Province is a beautiful place but it's also extremely dangerous. The rolling, green hills are home to wolves, rats, and bears, and the many dungeons that you'll come across are swarming with fiendish terrors that will stop at nothing to kill you. With that being said, it's very important to understand your enemies. Armed with this knowledge, you'll be better equipped to battle your foes. Therefore, we've prepared a list of some of the enemies in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and we've also provided tips on how to kill them. We can't guarantee that you'll be victorious, but if anything, you will be a much smarter warrior.
Goblins...for the win!Goblins: These ugly buggers aren't nearly as dangerous as they are annoying, but in packs, goblins are fearsome foes that'll do more than just give you a hard time. They're quick, have decent leaping ability, and they also have enough sense to block your attacks. And to make matters even worse, they come in several different flavors.
The weakest goblins are the ones that are just brandishing an iron weapon. They can still do some damage, but for the most part, all you have to do to take them down is to bum rush them and hack away.
Unfortunately, this strategy doesn't always work on the other goblin types. Take for instance the ones armed with bows. These guys are pretty accurate, and to kill them we recommend raising your shield whenever they prepare to fine an arrow, and as soon as it strikes the shield you should rush at them and just cut them to pieces. They're quick to reload, but they get all confused when you get in too close.
As for the other goblins, the ones with shields take a bit longer to kill because they block more often, but they can be easily taken down with patience. However, be cautious whenever you encounter a goblin shaman. These spell casting creatures are armed with a staff that unleashes dangerous electrical charges, and they're also known to summon other creatures to aid them in battle, though we've yet to see one of them do this.
Fortunately, the electrical blast from a shaman's staff can be easily dodged if you move in a zigzag. It is possible to kill one by hacking and slashing providing your health is maxed out, but we recommend dodging from a distance and just hitting them with arrows.
Mudcrab: These little guys hang out along most shorelines and only attack if you get too close. They'll really put up a fight, but mudcrabs are extremely slow and their attacks do little damage. Hell, you could just outrun them if you want, though they're easily killed even if you're playing as a low level character. Once destroyed, be sure to harvest the meat and use it to create potions later on.
Rats: Damn! And we thought NYC rats were huge! The vermin in Oblivion are as big as small kids and just as annoying. They hop all over the place and just love a good fight, but much like the mudcrab, they won't stand much of a chance against you unless you're being extremely careless. But they are extremely dangerous in packs, so make sure you have an exit strategy if they gang up on you.
Not as tough as he looks.Skeletons: There are several different types of skeletons and all of them are pretty dangerous. Some are armed with simple axes while others wield the bow, the sword, and a shield. Just one of them will give you headaches, so you can imagine what fighting against several may feel like.
They look wickedly cool and act tough, but skeletons are for the most part easily defeated. Just like battling low level warriors, all you have to do is block and then get a few good whacks, and if you've got some distance between you and your attacker, some arrows will get the job done. Also, you can hear a skeleton before you actually see it. They make eerie grinding noises (bone on bone), so if you hear that sound upon entering a dungeon, get ready to fight.
Scamp/Stunted Scamp: These little, red devils first appear inside of the first Oblivion gate, and then they begin popping up all over Tamriel. They're short, quick, and throw fire balls. Nasty stuff, but they're not impossible to kill; just incredibly annoying.
Initially, a scamp will hold its position and throw a few fire balls your way, and this pattern will continue until you whittle away about half of its energy, whereupon which the scamp will abandon its magic and just go all kamikaze on your ass and bum rush you. When this happens, you can either engage the creature in some melee combat, but to avoid damage, simply run backwards and plug it with arrows.Wolves: It's common to run into wolves while touring the countryside, which is a shame because they're a pain in the butt, though they're not too bad to deal with. Providing you have at least 50% health, you can just meet one head on and live to tell about it. However, we have run into invisible wolves, and these guys take a bit more skill to defeat. Bottom line, if you're low on health, just run backwards and get in some jabs here and there.
This guy's looking for more than just brains.Zombies: The undead are particularly bothersome for two reasons. First, there's no way to target their heads, and second, some of them have the power to regenerate health and they do it quickly. For that reason, zombies are a royal pain in the ass to deal with, but they're slow enough that you should able to take them down by luring them into a corner, jumping past them, then getting in some quick swipes or better yet, incinerating them with fire.
Horse: Horses are peaceful until you really piss them off. Then they become formidable adversaries. Not only will they chase you all across Tamriel, but if they can get close enough, they'll clobber you to death with their hooves. They're also surprisingly difficult to kill. For low level characters a horse is quite difficult to defeat, and as soon as a horse's HP reaches a certain point it turns tail and gallops away. But there's really no logical reason why you should want to harm one of them, so if you're super nice to the horse, the horse will be super nice to you.
Who you gonna call? Ghosts: Supernatural beings cannot be harmed by conventional weapons, so if you encounter one, be sure to sheath your sword and break out the magic. Ghosts can withstand cold, hard steel, but they're vulnerable to certain forms of magic and enchanted items. Whip out some spells and they'll be nothing more than a tiny dollop of green ectoplasm.
Bears: While not particularly fast, bears pose a great threat, especially to weary travelers. They'll knock you silly if you get too close, so plug them with arrows from a safe distance.
He doesn't look very friendly.Dremora: The Prince of Destruction employs many horrible creatures, most notably the Dremora. Fierce and blood thirsty, these dark soldiers are clad in really cool looking black and red armor yet they come in many different forms. All of them brandish weapons, and all of them can use some form of magic, whether that means conjuring other creatures or just firing powerful spells.
The weakest are the Dremora Churl. They're still extremely dangerous, but you can kill one with only a few arrows. By and large, if you keep your wits about you (and don't take on three or more at a time), you'll come out the winner, but be especially careful when dealing with the more high ranking warriors, particularly the Prince's personal body guards.
What's cool about the Dremora, aside from how bad ass they look, is the ability to take their hearts. When eaten, a Daedra heart will give you a tiny bit of health, and by tiny I mean barely noticeable. But you're still eating a monster's heart, so it's all good.
Minotaurs: These guys really pack a whallop! Not only do you need to worry about their signature head butt, but whatever heavy weapons they may be carrying. Minotaurs don't have any known weaknesses, at least from what I can see, and it's best to hit them from a distance.
Imps: If you're being hit by fire balls and have no idea where they're coming from, you're probably being attacked by an imp. Small and rather bothersome, imps fly around attacking anything that gets within their sights. They're easy to kill, providing you can actually spot one in the dark. Try to figure out where the fire is coming from and then move in that direction.
Arrows away!Clannfer Runt: You first encounter runts when you lead a small group of soldiers back into Kvatch. They sort of look like a cross between a raptor and a triceratops, but they're nowhere near as dangerous as the aforementioned meat eater. Like most creatures in Oblivion they're the most dangerous when in packs, and they have mysterious magical qualities, but they're not difficult to destroy, either by arrow or sword.
Bandits: During your travels you're going to come across people and other races that want to make your life unpleasant. In some instances, you'll just have wandered into their camp and they'll take exception to your presence, but there are also encounters where someone will attempt to mug you, and you have two options. You can fork over the cash and take your chances that they'll go away, or you can flat out refuse and beat their asses.
Is that all?
Of course not! There are plenty of other monsters that reside in Tamriel. We just think that some things should remain a secret. Happy adventuring!
